Homework and Practice Homework and Practice are often the two things most students hate about school though both are necessary for students to gain a better understanding of the topic at hand. Homework is usually given to me done at home with the help of parents or family. According to Concordia University homework provides an opportunity for parents to interact with and understand the content their students are learning so they can provide another means of academic support for students. Practice means that students are using their new found knowledge repeatedly until they gain a mastery of understanding. Student practive through activities within the classroom as well as homework outside the classroom is necessary for student success and overall achievement.

Four ways homework aids students’ academic achievement (According to Monica Fuglei at Concordia University)
Memphis Parent writer Glenda Faye Pryor-Johnson says that, “When your child does homework, you do homework,” and notes that this is an opportunity for parents to model good behavior for their children. Pryor-Johnson also identifies four qualities children develop when they complete homework that can help them become high-achieving students:
Responsibility
Time management
Perseverance
Self-esteem
While these cannot be measured on standardized tests, perseverance is an essential skill for successful students. Academic activities and accomplishments like finishing homework build self-esteem, which contribute to both a student’s health and mental well being. Time management and responsibility are also desirable traits that will only benefit students well into their adulthood.
Understand the four types of homework allows teachers and parents to understand when and why students need to practice.
Memorization of basic rules, algorithms, or laws so the skill becomes rote.
Increase in skill speed, used for improving students' abilities to apply these skills in more complex problem solving.
Deepening understanding of a concept—providing students time to read further, elaborating on a new idea and expanding their understanding.
Preparation for the following day's learning, such as an advance organizer or cue to increase readiness for new information.

Though there are some differences in the recommendations from these sources, the table shows a general consensus about how much homework should be assigned at each grade level. For grades 1-3, homework should be no more than an hour or less per day. Grades 4-6, show that homework should not exceed 90 minutes in total. Well the upper grades of 7-8 are approx. 2 hours and the limit in high school should be 2.5 hours depending on the subjects. Well homework is a powerful tool to encourage learning and a greater understanding of a subject it itself is not a sign of academic success. “Homework helps to promote learning only when students grasp the purpose of each homework assignment, clearly understand homework directions, perceive that homework tasks are instructionally relevant, and receive timely performance feedback (e.g., teacher comments; grades) on submitted homework” (Jenson, Sheridan, Olympia, & Andrews.
Overall homework is a great way for students to practice the knowledge they learned in the classroom. The amount of homework or practive given should greatly depend on the grade level and course being taught because you dont want the burden the students.
